There are two types of fire extinguishers:

The expellant depends upon the agent used for example nitrogen is used in dry chemical extinguishers and the air is used in water and foam extinguishers. They are the commonly used types of fire extinguishers.

In this type of fire extinguishers, expellant and firefighting agents are stored in separate chambers. The cartridge is punctured and the propellant is exposed to the agent, before the discharge. Carbon dioxide is used in cartridge fire extinguishers.
Cartridge extinguishers are the less used type of fire extinguisher. They are available in dry chemical, dry powder, water, and wetting agent types.

On the basis of weight, fire extinguishers are classified as:
- Handheld: they are less heavy their weight ranges from (0.3-14 kgs), making them easily carried by hands and hence portable.
- Cart-mounted extinguishers: they are also known as wheeled extinguishers. They are heavy in weight i.e, more than 23 kgs. They are mostly present at sites of construction, airports, heliports etc.

This type of fire extinguisher can be recognized by identifying the cream-colored label on the cylinder on which foam is written.

Foam-type fire extinguishers can be used for fire caused by organic materials such as paper and wood, flammable liquids like paint and petrol.
